Areas of responsibility are primarily focused on metallurgical evaluations of material samples for process qualifications, quality assurance, or failure analysis purposes, which include sample preparation, analysis using top class laboratory equipment, and reporting. The position can be done partly from home office.

What will be your task at this position?

  • Provide technical consultation and problem resolution on daily materials and processes activities within the manufacturing facility;
  • Focus is on special processes, which include thermal spray, heat treatments, protective coating application, welding, brazing, cleaning and plating operations;
  • Conduct metallurgical evaluations of material samples for quality assurance purposes, which include sample preparation, analysis, and reporting;
  • Manage process qualifications and First Article evaluations as well as quality audits for in-house and Supply Chain processes;
  • Perform failure analyses on serviced hardware returning to Zebrak per standard work defined in pertinent Guidance Notes and in coordination with San Diego M&P;
  • Acts as technical liaison between Zatec facility and Solar’s Materials and Processes Engineering department in San Diego;
  • Undertake advanced problem solving and detailed analysis to understand failure mechanism, contributing factors and root-cause;
  • Attend relevant training, seminars, and symposiums (local and international) for individual development;
  • A mentor and training program will be provided for the successful candidate based on areas of inexperience beyond the minimum requirements below.

What do we expect from a suitable candidate?

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering or equivalent;
  • 2 to 5 years’ experience in Engineering in the areas of materials analysis, manufacturing, and/or remanufacturing;
  • Extensive hands-on experience with sample preparation and multi-scale materials characterization techniques proficiency (optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, hardness/µhardness);
  • Fluent in English (including reading, writing, and verbal), with excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, material specifications and evaluate part condition;
  • Willing to spend several weeks of first year on-the-job training at some of the U.S. based Solar Turbines facilities;
  • Sound understanding of component design, material sciences, and/or remanufacturing methods and approval;
  • Experience using computer-based analysis and presentation tools (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
