RINA is currently recruiting for a Power System Design Principal Consultant to join its office in Manchester within the Consulting Country UK Division.

Role Overview

The Principal Consultant will be a member of the RINA UK Engineering Team and will contribute towards the effective execution of the engineering functions within projects and tenders. The Principal Consultant will lead and work in a skilled team on a wide range of international T&D substation projects. The position will focus on the project and tender engineering and its interfaces and scope of work involved in HV - substation design and construction projects, within the technical lead of the electro-mechanical design of substation to meet customer needs, legislative demands, and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical solution for substations comprising Single line diagram, technical information, layouts and associated detail drawings and documents by established applicable standards, processes, and customer specifications through allocated resources locally and in other business units
  • Develop technical concepts, technical specifications, selection of equipment and connection material considering costs, quality, international standards, and material.
  • Provide technical calculations, technical purchasing specification and schedules for all equipment for projects or tenders
  • Prepare bill of quantities & cost estimation, deviations & clarifications for technical solutions
  • Review of Suppliers design, Factory acceptance test plans, attend factory & site tests
  • Technical lead of large and complex EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation (AIS & GIS) projects
  • Engineering budget, schedule, forecast, and risk & change management activities
  • Ensure respect of project performance KPIs as defined in the proposal stage
  • Play a crucial role in the quality assurance of all work within the team, undertaking QA and checking of others work, reporting and deliverables

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • A thorough understanding of T&D theory, coupled with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a Transmission & Distribution Engineering environment
  • A Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant technical discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Power systems design up to 132kV (preferably up to 400kV) across a wide variety of projects for Industrial, Distribution and Transmission networks in some of the following key areas: Conceptual/Feasibility Study and Design, System Studies, Protection and Substation Design
  • Extensive substation engineering experience in utilities. Knowledge of required legislative demands and standards
  • Proficiency with simulation software and electrical circuit modelling tools
  • Knowledge of system studies like load flow, short circuit calculation, insulation coordination; Single Line Diagrams, CT/VT calculations, Auxiliary Power Systems, power cables
  • Knowledge of secondary engineering, protection and control systems
  • Experience in Installation & Commissioning is a plus-Strong in MS Office, knowledge in MicroStation and AutoCAD is required
