We are currently recruiting a Principal Design Engineer to join our Suspension, Steering and Brakes Design group. Collaborating with the Head of Suspension, Steering and Brakes, you will be responsible for managing a subgroup of Designers and Senior Designers within the department, covering a wide variety of assemblies throughout the F1 car.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent organisational skills working with relevant company departments and key stakeholders to achieve successful designs, often working to tight deadlines. A key focus will be on understanding design capabilities and what we can do to influence it, be that technology, procedures or training. You will use your relationships with the different vehicle design groups to educate them on best practice.

As Principal Design Engineer, you will be:

  • Managing a subgroup within the Design Department with an emphasis on assembly ownership and as far as possible, promoting autonomous, creative design to deliver maximum performance to the car.
  • Working closely with Aerodynamics and Vehicle Dynamics groups to optimise car performance.
  • Assigning and manage work within the team.
  • Conducting design reviews within the team and on a larger scale across Vehicle Design.
  • Checking and approving design specifications and checking drawings for production.
  • Management of related processes such as faults, track testing requests, accident damage assessment etc.
  • Promoting best design practice and driving continuous improvement.
  • Regularly attending meetings for planning, resourcing and fault liaison.
  • Some international travel may be required.

Our ideal candidate is someone who has:

  • An in depth understanding of fundamental engineering principles.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification supported by design experience in a top-level motorsport field.
  • Experience with simulation and stress calculations would also be advantageous.
  • Strong CAD skills, ideally with experience of NX, however training will be provided for conversion from other CAD systems.
  • Data analysis experience as it would be beneficial for this role.
  • Effective and efficient people management skills along with a strong knowledge of contemporary F1 technology and design.
  • An innovative approach to design and strong knowledge of manufacturing techniques is fundamental.
  • A creative, proactive approach to problem-solving, along with good attention to detail.
  • Confidence, and is well organised with the ability to clearly prioritise tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines, making sound decisions based on good judgement and seeking input as required.
  • Ability to integrate and work collaboratively at every level within the organisation.
  • An analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and trends.
