Short Description
Eaton's Aerospace business in Bedhampton, Hampshire currently has an opportunity for a Lead Engineer in Electronics Engineering with analogue and digital electronics design/development experience. This position works within a medium sized technical team of Mechanical, Design and Test engineers reporting to the site Engineering manager – supporting the manufacturing plant and the FMC (Fuel and Motion Control) division. The Lead Engineer will have in depth knowledge of analogue, digital and power electronics and associated tools for design, development, and implementation of products.
Excellent organizational & communication skills are also vital as the role will involve working on high profile aerospace projects. The lead Engineer will have Aerospace product development experience in both commercial as well as the military sector. The lead Engineer will have working knowledge of aerospace standards DO-160 and DO-254, and also knowledge of OEM customer practices and regulations. The role also requires working knowledge of Design for Six Sigma principles as well as Design for Manufacturability principles in electronic product development.
What you’ll do
- Execution of highly technical electronics products from concept creation to design, development, qualification, and industrialisation;
- Support business with day to day sustaining type activities i.e. use of alternative electronic sub-assemblies due to supply chain constraints/obsolescence or reliability concerns;
- Act as a subject matter expert for electronic products within the Eaton Bedhampton Portfolio;
- Accountable for driving cost out initiatives by actively reviewing existing designs for opportunities of cost reduction;
- Lead obsolescence management of existing products within the portfolio and adopt a proactive approach for identifying obsolescence risks and manging the changes as required;
- Lead product investigation and liaise with customer and suppliers as required to resolve reliability as well as manufacturability issues in a timely manner;
- Originate and develop Analog/Power electronics circuit design concept, approach, evaluation, selection, and adapt complex criteria, techniques, and procedures to resolve difficult problems;
- Lead NPI, cost out and Sustaining projects to cost and schedule. Collaborate with other departments and team members (design, mechanical and test Engineering) on a day-to-day basis to deliver projects successfully;
- Lead the analog/power electronics design function within projects and support conformance assurance to objectives and schedules, laboratory testing; prototype procurement; follow-up etc.;
- Produce analytical designs using tools such as Matlab/Simulink and or Saber to tight timescales and be able to then convert this analysis into practical production designs in conjunction with other disciplines within the Engineering department;
- Author technical documents as part of project execution to the highest standards;
- Support Engineering manager and Program Managers with technical input for internal and customer PDRs/CDRs as required and various conferences as appropriate;
- Keep informed on trends and developments within specialty or general area of activity. Promote consideration of findings immediately or prospectively useful in developing new or improving existing products;
- Support the Manufacturing function with yield issues as required;
- Ensure adherence to Eaton process as well as customer expectations when it comes to design changes and modification of products;
- Support Customer audits as well as Eaton internal audits as required.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Analogue electronics and/or Power electronics design experience;
- Engineering degree or equivalent with strong technical problem solving skills;
- Working knowledge of Matlab/Simulink, Saber or similar analogue simulation tools is a distinct advantage;
- Understanding of Product Development Process in general;
- Communications skills – both verbal and written with ability to generate and communicate clear status reports;
- Knowledge of/familiarization with DO-160 and/or DO-254 standards;
- Strong project management skills with good prioritization and time management;
- Evidence of leadership skills and ability to develop junior engineers;
- Flexible with working hours to meet work demands;
- Good and practical understanding of design techniques for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
