The Role:

Head of discipline, lead, manage and develop the technical resource, competencies and capabilities of the business.

Recognised as an expert, the Electrical and Power Systems Discipline Manager is qualified to act as the discipline’s technical authority and is driven to promote a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement and innovation. The EPS Discipline Manager is a capable leader and is skilled at identifying key competency requirements, matching these with resources either by existing personnel utilisation/development or in the selection and recruitment of new personnel.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Business

  • Responsible for ensuring that all discipline activities conform to the corporate SHEQ Plan;
  • Implementation and adherence to the requirements of any Project Quality Plan within area of responsibility;
  • Management of the discipline’s resource and work assignment to fulfil the company’s objectives and obligations;
  • Input to company proposals for new business to include assessment and estimation of work scope including resourcing requirements, scoping narratives and manhour estimates;
  • Represent DORIS UK in all matters relating to electrical engineering. Power Studies and company capabilities;
  • Development of and adherence to, clear and consistent working processes, implementing appropriate methods for process performance improvement.

Technical

  • To supervise and lead teams carrying out electrical engineering for renewable energy assets (offshore wind in particular, small scale solar) and conventional and new energies (oil, gas and hydrogen, BESS) encompassing conceptual, FEED, detailed design, greenfield and brownfield scopes including:
    • Provision of appropriate skilled discipline resource projects;
    • Supervision of analysis and design reports and relevant drawings/models, where appropriate lead design work;
    • Specification writing, datasheet production, requisition development, bid analysis and vendor coordination for Electrical equipment.
  • Specify, Lead and/or supervise electrical power system studies and grid compliance studies (ETAP, DigSilent Power Factory), particularly applicable to offshore wind engineering projects. (load flow analysis, short circuit calculations, and protection systems, performing power system transient analysis, harmonics, frequency response);
  • Desirable to have coding skills in Python, C++ and similar;
  • Engineering applications with HVAC and HVDC systems;
  • Vendor performance monitoring and verification/quality review of sub-contracted discipline work. Assess the suitability of vendor offered equipment to meet client, functional, quality, reliability, environmental and safety requirements;
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on engineering methods and execution;
  • To ensure that all discipline work is conducted by competent staff and subjected to robust reviews, checks and verifications to ensure technical excellence and timeliness, including project discipline staff located remotely;
  • Identification of key interfaces with other disciplines/departments and resolution of potential difficulty/conflict, bringing these to the attention of the Head of Operations and respective Project Managers;
  • Remain up to date across all industry sectors that DORIS UK services with design developments, statutory regulations, codes of practice and offshore/onshore industry standards, notifying the Head of Operations of upcoming changes/opportunities in these areas;
  • Have keen knowledge of classification rules and ensuring compliance with electrical engineering standards e.g. (IEC/IEEE/BS/IMCA/MTS/OCIMF);
  • To develop discipline procedures, work instructions and design briefs to ensure clarity of engineering methods and consistency of results;
  • Identification and development of tools/software to improve working efficiencies and to enhance discipline capabilities;
  • Provision of Technical Assurance (TA) across projects by means of routine informal auditing of technical work, supplemented by formal official design audits for specific projects;
  • Ensure project discipline staff located remotely work to the required level of review and checks.

Department

  • Develop, maintain and manage the discipline structure within the UK operation to support ongoing and future work;
  • Staff and contractor recruitment, selection and assignment including both preliminary and ongoing competency assessment;
  • Provide training, mentoring and assistance in the continuous professional development of discipline graduates, trainees and junior staff;
  • Conducting staff appraisals identifying areas for development and training needs.

Experience:

  • Over 10 years’ experience in electrical engineering with the last 5 years in a principal supervisory/management role;
  • Experience in Renewables (offshore wind in particular), including High Voltage and Low Voltage design, with an appreciation of Power Management Systems and SCADA interface and integration, HV equipment and cable design;
  • Experience in onshore and offshore Oil and Gas engineering applications;
  • It may be desirable to have some experience working within Instrumentation, Controls and Telecommunications.

Qualifications:

  • Chartered Engineer, Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering.
