Job Description

Join our team as an Engineering Director to lead the strategic planning, engineering capability development and technical delivery of projects across our Decommissioning and Fuels business.

As a Global top 3 independent nuclear engineering organisation, Assystem is active across the full decommissioning lifecycle. In the UK, we work across the Civil and Defence nuclear estates, pioneering agile and fit-for purpose, customer-focused solutions, drawing on our established pedigree for delivery engineering excellence. Assystem have a proud heritage gained over decades both in the UK and overseas, (delivering, supporting, managing) some of the most complex engineering projects in decommissioning, repurposing legacy assets and key new build projects such as Hinkley Point C.

Following a string of contract awards and in the face of a strong pipeline of critical bids, Assystem is recruiting an Engineering Director to lead the strategic planning, engineering capability development and technical delivery of projects across our Decommissioning and Fuels business lines, in alignment with the directorate’s 2030 Plan.

Role Requirements

  • Represent Assystem Values: Lead the growth of a diverse, collaborative, and high-performing engineering team.
  • Engineering Leadership: Provide oversight for complex, multi-disciplinary projects within your assigned account, and act as the go-to person for any engineering issues raised by project teams or clients.
  • Capability Development: Develop and manage a strategic plan for expanding our Decommissioning and Fuels capability, aligning with customer needs and our department’s 2030 vision.
  • Collaborative Implementation: Work closely with the Technical Director, Business Managers, Key Account Management, and Resource Management to support the implementation of the Budget Delivery Plan, Key Account Plans, and department transformation initiatives.
  • Integration of Capabilities: Lead the integration of expertise from UK business streams (PMC and Digital) and international entities to deliver unified, collaborative solutions.
  • Competitive Differentiation: Ensure your team possesses best-in-class technical talent to innovate, support business development, and solve challenging problems.
  • Customer and Stakeholder Engagement: Interface with customer stakeholders and regulatory bodies at all levels, including senior leadership, to build strong, trusting relationships.
  • Sales & Operations Support: Partner with sales and operations teams to showcase Assystem’s technical capabilities to current and potential customers, while driving the engineering aspects of proposals and value propositions.
  • Opportunity Assessment: Assist in evaluating business opportunities and pipeline potential to ensure the right capabilities are available.
  • Technical Recruitment: Support technical recruitment efforts, including candidate selection and interviews, to build a strong, talented team.
  • Process Improvement: Lead and contribute to the enhancement of our company’s technical processes, ensuring continuous improvement and excellence.
  • Cross-Department Alignment: Collaborate with other Engineering Directors to align capability development, share transferable skills, and optimize capacity across all business units.

  • Proven Leadership: Drive major, multi-disciplinary engineering projects across the entire lifecycle with strategic and technical expertise.
  • Nuclear Decommissioning Expertise: Successfully manage and deliver large-scale, high-hazard nuclear decommissioning projects.
  • Engineering Management: Demonstrated experience in leading engineering teams and projects.
  • Collaborative Ventures: Thrive in Joint Ventures or Alliance Partnering arrangements, ensuring smooth and effective collaboration.
  • Customer Focused: Influence technical decision-makers, budget holders, and stakeholders (e.g., Regulators), resolving challenging project issues with a win-win approach.
  • Continuous Improvement: Apply lessons learned and process improvements to develop high-performing teams.
  • Tech-Savvy: Excellent IT skills to support project delivery and management.
  • Organised & Communicative: Strong organisational and communication skills are a must.

Key Qualifications:

  • Security Clearance: Ability to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).
  • Project Measurement & Delivery: Experience in measuring and delivering project/programme benefits.
  • Contract Management: Expertise in NEC3/NEC4 contracts and current Legislative Regulations (e.g., CDM).
  • Quality Compliance: Ensure compliance with Quality Management Systems and subcontractor design assurance.
  • Educational Excellence: Engineering degree qualified, preferably Chartered.
