We are seeking a dynamic leader to direct and develop a team responsible for the discovery of disruptive manufacturing technologies. The role will include coaching and growing our Manufacturing/Process Technology team, working with technical experts and executive management to define technical direction, and facilitating collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Success in the role is defined by driving new-to-the-world technologies to deployment in our next-generation battery factories around the globe.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Work with the team, senior leadership, and internal customers to define the process technology roadmap for Northvolt’s next-generation factories;
  • Coach and support engineers and scientists through consistent feedback, navigation of challenges, and providing development opportunities to encourage technical and professional growth;
  • Ensure deliverables and timelines are met for a range of innovations in battery processing steps (i.e., mixing, coating, cell assembly, electrolyte filling, formation, aging, etc.);
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard new Northvolters to expand our team’s capabilities and diversity;
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Advanced Materials, Product, Customer Programs, and executive leadership to proactively address evolving market needs and ensure key engineering pivots are made;
  • Work with our Advanced Materials and Cell Development teams to drive mechanistic understanding of process vs. cell vs. material design correlations.

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams (5+ years), showcasing a commitment to intellectual honesty, empathy, and winning together;
  • 13+ years of experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree) with process design and/or equipment engineering in a battery manufacturing relevant area (i.e., slurry mixing, coating, device assembly, electrochemical testing, failure mode analysis, etc.), preferably within a lithium-ion battery manufacturing organisation;
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, process and quality standards, PFMEA, Lean tools (six sigma, RCA, 5S, etc.), health and environmental safety policies and procedures, etc.;
  • Demonstrated ability to drive step function improvements in process design, cost savings, yield, quality, resource management, and space utilisation;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide array of personalities and stakeholders, driving alignment, prioritisation, and progress in rapidly changing situations;
  • Experience developing and commercialising disruptive energy storage technologies (i.e., consumer electronics, transportation, residential, utility/grid, etc.);
  • At least a B.S. in engineering or physical sciences (i.e., Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing engineering, or Chemistry, Physics);
  • Excellent English written and oral skills.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience with battery material selection, cell design, electrode processing, cell assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis, preferably within a battery manufacturing organisation.
  • Fluency in other languages (i.e., Japanese, Swedish, Korean, German, Chinese, French).
  • Experience with manufacturing software and digitalisation.
