  • To manage the installation of all plant systems located within the tokamak building complex, including the cooling water systems, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, electrical busbars and the associated components;
  • To be responsible for developing an overall strategy for completing the installation of the relevant plant systems, focusing on integration, logistics, schedule and cost, and for ensuring acceptability with the system designers;
  • To be in charge of the elaboration of the procedures required to assemble and install the system hardware, the preparation, maintenance and integration of the installation schedule and the associated resource and cost estimates, the conceptualization of the required tooling, and the identification and development of the necessary enabling technologies.

Back-ground information:

The Construction teams shall support the Director-General (DG) of the ITER Organization (IO) to achieve the ITER Project’s objectives in compliance with ITER regulations and IO rules, comprehensive of contracts management, budget and planning, execution and completion of the erection activities on site according to the agreed time schedule to achieve the required performance, including Assembly and Installation of the ITER Machine, Tokamak Complex and Plant facilities, leveraging the contract of Construction Management as Agent, in close cooperation with Engineering and Science & Operations Domains and Domestic Agencies, supported by Corporate Domain.

Main duties/Responsibilities

Please note that an organizational restructuring is planned in accordance with the needs of the organization and the evolution of the project phases. In this context, the unit of assignment of the present position may be updated in late 2019, early 2020.

  • Develops strategies and concepts for assembling, installing, and aligning the plant systems;
  • Elaborates, validates and maintain the assembly procedures, schedules, resource requirements and cost estimates;
  • Identifies and conceptualizes the assembly tooling required to ensure successful installation and alignment of plant systems;
  • Supervises teams of engineers contributing to the above work;
  • Writes technical specifications for the engineering design, procurement and installation of the assembly tooling;
  • Reviews the drawing up of technical specifications for the site works contracts associated with the systems for which the ITER Organization (IO) is responsible;
  • Identifies specific development tasks and/or feasibility studies which may be needed for the assembly and installation of plant systems, including writing technical specifications and cost estimates;
  • Evaluates the engineering designs , provides guidance on assembly aspects, and participates in the review of the Constructability of the plant systems;
  • Participates in the monitoring of the manufacturing and acceptance of components;
  • Provides expertise and engineering support to the execution of the construction works;
  • May assist with offsite/onsite inspection and acceptance activities such as Factory or Site Acceptance Tests, resolution of Request for Information, Non-Conformance Report, Field Change Request or other issues;
  • Manages interfaces with the system Responsible Officers (ROs), all Departments/Offices within the ITER Organization and its Partners at all levels;
  • May be required to work outside ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

Measures of effectiveness

  • Implements the technical control of the Protection Important Activities, as well as their propagation to the entire supply chain;
  • May be requested to be part of any of the project/construction teams and to perform other duties in support of the project schedule.
  • Develops and maintains the Assembly Plan for plant systems;
  • Promotes the installation strategy, the associated schedule, cost and resource estimates, and secures the acceptance of the related team players;
  • Generates and maintains coherent, comprehensive and understandable documentation;
  • Maintains effective communications with collaborators at all levels of the ITER Organization and the Domestic Agencies (DAs).

Level of study

  • Master or equivalent degree.


  • Mechanical Engineering or other relevant.

Level of experience

  • At least 10 years.

Technical experience/knowledge

  • At least 10 years’ experience in the planning and construction of large, complex engineering projects with a strong emphasis on the installation of mechanical and piping systems;
  • Experience in the installation of plant systems during building construction ;
  • Extensive knowledge of Quality Assurance systems and their practical application;
  • Experience with international procurement and tendering;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions to complex engineering problems;
  • Experience in coordinating tasks of technicians or engineers;
  • Extensive experience in similar jobs (involving similar work responsibilities) and/or additional training certificates in relevant domains may be considered a reasonable substitute for the required educational degree.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports in English.

  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of software;
  • Good working knowledge of CATIA V5, and its associated viewers;
  • Knowledge of Intergraph SmartPlant Construction would be an advantage.
