About us

We are seeking a Product Environmental Compliance Engineer to join our Service, Quality and Environment function The Product Compliance Engineer is responsible for legal tracking, interpretation and, in cooperation with HQ, concluding on necessary actions with regards to the new and updated legislation affecting Sony products.

Key requirements of the position include:

  • Ensure Business Groups are timely and correctly informed on the latest regulatory requirements and upcoming changes of environmental legislations (particularly addressing Chemicals) as well as future product environmental compliance trends in European Region.
  • Identify and secure legal tracking tools (databases, newspapers, etc.) for the above-mentioned legislation.
  • Implement the Sony Global and European Environmental Program under the Global Environmental Management System (GEMS) in the European Region
  • Perform Corporate GEMS and OHS Corporate audits at European GEMS certified sites in the European Region to ensure full compliance to ISO14001:2015 and ISO45001:2018 standards

You will cover the geographical region of Europe, Russia, former Soviet Union countries, Turkey and Israel. The Company Scope is all Sony group companies in Europe, including Sony Europe (incl. branch offices), Sony DADC, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, Sony Music and Sony Pictures.

You will be joining a team of subject matter experts, each covering specific areas i.e. Product Safety, Eco Design, Consumer Law, Radio Equipment and EMC. You will also have a manager who has broad experience within Sony Electronics, and will be able to support and guide you through the organisational landscape while encouraging your personal development and growth at Sony.

You will:

Legal Tracking:

  • Identify and follow-up on upcoming and updated European environmental legislations addressing Chemicals and market needs affecting products by utilizing tracking tools and established network
  • Analyse regulatory requirements legally & technically
  • Coordinate, review and consolidate the analysis of local regulatory requirements done by in-country support
  • Inform HQ timely on needs to adapt product design in time to comply with related legislation
  • Draft & define, in cooperation with HQ, guidelines and instructions with appropriate conformity actions for Business Groups to secure compliant products are placed on the market
  • When required, follow-up on conformity actions (e.g. Declaration of Conformities) with local branch offices, Sony sites and European Business Units to secure compliance

Lobbying & Standardization:

  • Lobbying: Represent Sony in trade associations (e.g. Digital Europe,) and steer trade association output to reflect company’s interests
  • Monitor and analyse harmonized standards:
    • Monitor EU OJ publications to identify any newly listed standards
    • Prepare analysis of the standards changes and inform BGs so that they can prepare to comply with sufficient lead-time
  • Represent Sony in standardization bodies (national, European (ETSI), or international (IEC) to secure Sony’s input is raised and reflected

Internal Consultancy:

  • Advise Business Groups, in-country contacts, local sales/marketing in compliance related matters (e.g. interpretation of regulations/standards, requirements for new products etc.)
  • Act/report proactively when recognizing significant Business risks for Product compliance
  • Assist in-country contacts for local lobbying activities with governmental bodies, industry associations and standardisation bodies

Implement the Global and European Programs under the Global Environmental Management System (GEMS) and the Global OHS Management System (OHSMS):

  • Support and advise the sites to carry out the key requirements of GEMS and OHSMS including the preparation for external certification audits
  • Implement the global environmental and OHS programs in the region
  • Identify common opportunities for improvement in the region, and propose and implement the European environmental and OHS program s
  • Communicate and share the GEMS and OHS knowledge and best practices among the sites
  • Develop regional standards

Corporate GEMS & OHS audit

  • Coordinate the corporate audit as the audit team member
  • Follow-up with the audit team on the audit progress and status
  • Collect input from the audit team on the environmental & OHS risks, opportunities for improvement during the audit , and best practices during the audit
  • Compile and share the audit materials with HQ
  • Follow up and support the sites to close the audit findings in an appropriate and timely manner

You will have:

  • Educational: Master degree in chemistry or toxicology; or in science, engineering or laws with extensive chemical knowledge
  • Ability to represent the company at Regulatory Affairs and drive discussions in related fields with external stakeholders such as standardization committees, trade associations, authorities, NGOs and customers
  • Knowledge of or particular interest for the following legislation:
    • New legislative framework (NLF), CE marking
    • Chemical legislation (RoHS, REACH, Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)), Consumer Health and industry material declaration practices
    • Ability to analyse, interpret regulatory requirements and conclude necessary actions
  • Experience in auditing, ideally certified auditor for ISO14001 (Environment) and/or ISO45001 (OHS)
  • Advanced communication and networking skills
  • Have accurate and precise work attitude and pay attention to details
  • Must be highly self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Comfortable to work as a team player in multicultural environment
  • Good knowledge on technical features of electronic products, and familiarity with Sony products are an asset
  • Fluent in English (and ideally also in at least one other European language)
