Summary

The Principal Mechanical Engineer, Renal Care - R&D, will be responsible for developing creative solutions to challenging issues associated with the design, development, and sustaining engineering for Baxter’s dialysis business. The successful candidate will possess solid technical abilities, project management abilities, and leadership skills, bringing excitement and energy for product development, a passion for their work, and the impact it has on meeting the needs of patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leverages knowledge of technology, process, and/or therapy domains to drive solutions and product design realization;
  • Contributes through demonstrated hands-on participation with teams. Accountable for direct production of project deliverables;
  • Contributes to design concepts and research methodologies that best meet current and future customer & business needs for a product or process domain area;
  • An active and engaged member of Design Review Teams;
  • Proposes and drives solutions to complex technical problems;
  • Participates as a member of cross functional teams and/or integrates cross functional inputs to delivery of a project of moderate technical and strategic complexity. May integrate technical development schedules for those products or subsystems, provided as input to the full cross functional project schedule;
  • Engaged and respected within the team, for example may act as the leader for a subsystem for products of high complexity, as PDO, LSD, Technical Lead for products of simple to moderate complexity or as a subject matter expert on technical problems;
  • Applies diligence in determining the best solution(s) for technical issues. Focuses on critical information without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail.
  • Utilizes creative thinking and teamwork to resolve conflicts;
  • Embraces accountability for critical decisions and deliverables within area of responsibility (e.g. program milestones, technical design reviews, due diligence, etc.);
  • Demonstrates good business judgment in balancing budget, profitability and vendor relationships;
  • May lead junior technical team members within area of responsibility to complete projects with quality, within time, and budget boundaries;
  • May coach junior engineers to grow the technical strategic competencies required in Renal Care;
  • Demonstrates understanding of and adherence to FDA, ISO and IEC design control procedures, regulations and standards within area of responsibility/expertise;
  • Contributes to the professional growth of junior staff members.

Qualifications

  • BS. in Engineering (Mechanical preferred) and 5-7 years of experience in the development and testing of mechanic/mechatronic devices;
  • Experience with electromechanical and/or medical devices is preferred, especially dialysis equipment;
  • Experience working with a Product Lifecycle Management tool such as PDMLink;
  • Experience developing 3D models using Creo or equivalent;
  • Experience using engineering statistical methods to aid in the development decision process;
  • Demonstrated root cause analysis and problem solving skills;
  • Cross-functional team experience, including technical and non-technical work;
  • Must be self-motivated, have good interpersonal skills, capable of analyzing and solving complex problems through innovative thought and experience;
  • An engineer in this role must demonstrate the following behaviors:

    • Proposes and drives solutions to technical problems;
    • Gives and accepts constructive feedback;
    • Takes accountability for own behavior and adjusts appropriately;
