Overall Purpose:

  • The Control and Instrumentation engineer (C&I engineer) is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes
  • This includes the integration of error proofing systems and database storage/interface technologies

Job Dimensions:

  • The individual will ensure that systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely. The expectation is that the individual will work with companies who manufacture and supply equipment to BW
  • A thorough understanding of the operational processes of an organisation is essential. It is a multidisciplinary role, working closely with colleagues across a number of functions, including operations, purchasing and design

Controls Engineer

  • Visit suppliers and clients during the design/implementation of key investments
  • Work to tight deadlines and within budget
  • Develop skills in advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)
  • Work collaboratively with internal staff to reach targets
  • Project manage within cost and time constrained environments
  • Write computer software and test procedures
  • Develop new business proposals
  • Analyse data and presenting findings in written reports
  • Work with various plant floor systems for process monitoring and control, scheduling, and quality data collections
  • Work with maintenance management systems and equipment interface requirements (example OEE calculations)
  • Ensure all controls systems modified or installed on equipment comply with the standard on machinery safety to comply with the latest updated version of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC ​
  • Support the development of the capability of maintenance and manufacturing engineering personnel skills on equipment control systems
  • *Irregular working hours can be normal for a Controls Engineer, who may need to be on-call or on standby to deal with faults which occur

  • The upholding of health and safety standards, including timely reaction to all health and safety issues

Risk Management

The jobholder is responsible for working in compliance with BorgWarner’s policies and procedures to identify and record issues relating to the management of risk.

External

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronic Engineering is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years, experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing systems is essential
  • Detailed understanding of real-time manufacturing data systems
  • Programming Logic Controllers (PLCs) is required
  • Working knowledge of RSLogix 5000 systems maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Programming in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Visual Basic 6.0, and VB.NET Relational databases
  • AP/Oracle Manufacturing and interface experience
