Summary:

Stryker presents a rare and exciting opportunity to join a highly motivated team in developing key technology to enable the evolution of new surgical techniques in Neurosurgery and Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) surgery. The successful candidate will be based at our Innovation Centre in Cork and provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplined team in establishing the needs of our customers while designing and bringing innovative solutions for Neurosurgery and ENT applications to market. The Innovation Centre, which features unique design and collaboration workspaces, state-of-the-art prototyping and test facilities, and a simulated operating room, is the first of its kind in Ireland. The centre focuses on the development of new technologies and products to improve patient safety and outcomes during surgery in addition to increasing operating room efficiency across multiple surgical specialties including neuro, spine, ENT and orthopaedic surgery.

The Senior Principal Engineer supports the R&D team on technical challenges in the development of cost effective, best in class new products for Neurosurgical and ENT applications. Through a thorough understanding and wide application of engineering principles, techniques and concepts, provides technical leadership and training to product development teams to enable exceptional product performance and satisfaction of user needs. A technical expert, the Senior Principal Engineer will provide coaching and mentoring for the R&D team members. Through creativity and ingenuity, they will promote and stimulate an environment that supports the generation of value-adding intellectual property in alignment with the clinical and technology roadmaps of the business. While maintaining a customer focus, the Senior Principal engineer will support collaboration across the Stryker community, promoting connectivity for an integrated R&D strategy in Neurosurgical and ENT applications.

The Senior Principal Engineer will provide technical support and counsel to R&D teams on active projects. They will also identify emerging technologies and instigate, manage, support and provide direction on early stage research that is consistent with the objectives of the clinical and technology roadmaps of the business. This will include supporting the business development team if required. Products include Neurosurgical and ENT High-Speed Drill platforms, Cranial Perforators, Sinus Shaver platform, Ultrasonic aspirator platform for bone and tumour removal, and electrosurgical devices for Neurosurgical applications.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Create imaginative, thorough and practical technical solutions that are key to successful product development. Protect technology development that are core to the long-term success of the business through the patent protection and invention disclosure process.
  • You will provide technical leadership to highly creative design teams internally and externally to invent and develop innovative successful new product concepts. o-ordinate smart, innovative solutions to design challenges, and research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity.
  • Evaluate and advise on concepts for mechanical function and manufacturability. Drive product designs and creation of prototypes from customer concepts and/or specifications to test and validate ideas.
  • Through advanced statistical techniques and engineering tools, drive design approaches and parameters and initiate feasibility studies on new designs. Act as Independent Reviewer for design review meetings, while building a technology network, both internal and external. Collaborate with other technical leaders in other business units and divisions to ensure a holistic approach is being taken on customer solutions.
  • While understanding other functions and divisions capabilities, drive interaction with peers, suppliers, advanced manufacturing engineering and advanced operations to meet user needs, resolve issues, and optimize design for manufacturability and efficiency. Will ensure designs are cost efficient, manufacturable and reliable.
  • You will lead team efforts to identify, determine product requirements, generate production drawings for parts and assemblies and develop and manage full product design documentation.
  • This position is accountable for departments achieving product performance and quality objectives, program planning and effective execution, as well as communicating program status and escalating issues when appropriate.
  • Advises teams on approaches to resolving end customers product related issues, through problem solving and troubleshooting product design, product training and relationship building.
  • Guides management and supports business development as required on technical direction and participates in the analysis of emerging technologies.
  • Coach and develop team members; may have direct reports.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Bachelor Engineering Degree (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Biomedical Engineering) with a minimum of 10 years or more experience, or a related Master’s degree with 8 years or more experience, or related PhD with 6 years or more experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to express ideas and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate up/down and across different levels of the organization.
  • Innovative approach to envisioning new and better ways to work.
  • Teaching complex problem-solving techniques related to design/technical issues. Good instincts and sound judgment for mechanical and structural design.
  • Expert in statistical tools and validation/verification techniques.
  • Excellent analytical skills, ability to plan, organize, and implement multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Must be able to analyze and correct complex product and/or process issues and make decisions using independent judgement.
  • Expertise in human anatomy and common surgical procedures is a benefit.
  • Good working knowledge of CAM/CAE computer systems, engineering materials and design, coating technologies, plastic part design and advanced manufacturing technologies. Fluent in 3D CAD with good working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis tools.
  • Must be a Subject Matter Expert in engineering areas such as the interpretation of complex engineering drawings, geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing, stack-up analysis and limits and fits.
  • Must be able to generate, follow and explain detailed proposals and operating procedures with an in depth understanding of ISO 13485 and FDA quality system requirements.
  • PC Literate (word processing, spreadsheets, data base) and strong knowledge of project Management tools is essential.
  • The individual should enjoy working in a dynamic and results oriented team environment focusing on quality, compliance and customer satisfaction.
  • Willingness to travel internationally for live surgery, customer visits and global partner collaboration.
