Job Purpose/Overview

The HPC Project is a complex industrial endeavour; it will take a decade to build with multiple construction phases to be completed. The ultimate goal of the HPC Project is to safely deliver a completed plant with lifetime records, to the right quality, on time, on budget and with nuclear safety considered in every step, to enable successful operation. The HPC Construction Director has identified the need for a Senior Nuclear Island Construction Lead to manage and lead the delivery of Nuclear Island for the HPC Project to ensure consistency in delivery to the nuclear safety, quality, efficiency, schedule, and cost commitments.

The job purpose is to provide leadership and coordination for the management and organisation of the construction teams and deliverables (including engineering) for both Units of the HPC project. This will include heavy interface and coordination with Bylor, the Civil Works contractor at the site.

Reports to the Construction Director.

Contextual Information

Hinkley Point C is a nuclear site, based in West Somerset, 15 miles from Bridgwater. The NNB ambition is to build two major EPR nuclear plants, and the position will be part of the construction organisation working within the Site Command Centre.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Management, control and delivery against the construction schedule for the Nuclear Island;
  • Leadership of the Nuclear Island Team (both units) and contractors;
  • Management and organisation of people – and deliverables (including engineering);
  • Management and coordination with the Civil works contractor (BYLOR) – with a focus on enabling BYLOR to succeed;
  • Integrating the lessons learnt from Unit 1 into the delivery of Unit 2 – focussing on the management of NCRs, FCRs, RFIs, etc.;
  • Driving all the readiness reviews and looking ahead 3 to 6 months to ensure we have what we need.

Dimensions

The post holder will be based at Site Command Centre, at the HPC construction site. This post holder may be required to travel to the Delivery Command Centre in Bristol, as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

The Nuclear Island Senior Construction Lead will have project management and execution experience, ideally in leading complex nuclear projects in Engineering, Procurement and Construction and the integration of these activities. In addition, they will possess a robust understanding of project controls, project life cycles and processes. The Nuclear Island Senior Construction Lead will have the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. Strong management and communication skills are essential. Specific knowledge, skills, qualification and experience include:

  • Understanding of working in a Nuclear or Safety Quality Culture;
  • Extensive working knowledge in the delivery of large complex projects;
  • Strong communication skills in English required, knowledge of French can be an advantage;
  • Project delivery experience, with an understanding of the project life cycle;
  • A self-starting attitude with the ability to work with the wider team at all levels for success;
  • Very confident in speaking publically and coordinating the resolution of complex issues with stakeholders;
  • Degree (Masters desirable) in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Equivalent in Construction Management or related subject or a demonstrable level of experience based on years of experience and project assignments;
  • Experience operating in a high security environment advantageous.
  • Chartered desirable.

Nuclear Specific Competencies:

  • Experience with Nuclear programmes, and work in a nuclear quality culture is required.
