Functional Tasks & Responsibilities

Automation engineering responsibilities

  • Use programming skills to automate the site production and auxiliary processes (e.a utilities), both through small change work orders and project work, according to expectations (time, quality, cost).
  • Take responsibility for resolving day-to-day automation and process control issues.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call system for nights & weekends. Drive the functional analysis of a specific change or project, together with the project engineers and area coordinators.
  • Lead the start-up of the projects (FAT tests, IO tests, SAT tests) in collaboration with other engineers and the area coordinators. Handing over the project to the operational group after testing.
  • Collaborate pro-actively within the automation group so that automation and programming principles used at the site are being followed up.
  • Improve continuously the standardization of the automation work.
  • Stay up-to-date with the automation safety engineering principles (alarms, safety interlocks, …) and implements where needed.
  • Update the automation manuals and other documentation (e.g. functional descriptions, ISO procedures, ...) with the automation group.
  • Ensure necessary automation training for other production personnel (process technicians, area coordinators, ...).
  • Assist in applying the necessary software updates for the main automation systems (Delta V) as well as for other specific software (e.a. OSI PI, PLC).
  • Assist in critical hardware (servers, PLV, controllers, ET,….) renewals.

Electrical Project lead responsibilities

  • Responsible for process design and project execution, focused in the electrical & instrumentation field.
  • Drive the local project team to come to a justifiable scope and budget in time.
  • Work with internal/external engineering and construction companies to further execute the projects.
  • Troubleshoot specific issues in the engineering disciplines of electricity and instrumentation (E&I).
  • Under functional guidance of the site electrical safety professional, give technical and procedural guidance to the maintenance and contractor groups (electricity and instrumentation).
  • Take ownership for implementing the best electricity and instrumentation practices at the site and drive optimization (cost, robustness, process) in this area.
  • Contribute to Process safety management within the engineering group (e.a Process Hazard Analysis).

Specific Issues

  • Capable to combine the automation function with a role as project leader for mainly electrical oriented projects.
  • Open to participate in a rotating on-call system for nights & weekends.


Know-how & experience

  • Degree: Master of Industrial Sciences (Electromechanical) or Master of Science in Engineering (Electromechanical engineering) or equivalent through experience.
  • Knowledge of batch S88 set-up and automation in DCS systems (Delta V) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of PLC’s (S7) within a production environment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of hardware changes/needs is a plus.
  • Process control strategies.
  • Electrical skills: BA5.
  • Languages: Dutch (mother tongue), fluent in English.
  • PC skills: Excellent IT skills (profound knowledge of Excel, Word). Knowledge of SAP is a plus.
  • Experience: 2 to 5 years in a similar role.


  • Able to apply the necessary engineering skills in the following disciplines: automation, process control, electricity (incl. high voltage), instrumentation, safety, and project management.
  • Motivated by development in software and hardware.
  • Demonstrate people skills to motivate and lead a project team.
  • Demonstrate the necessary safety leadership skills at the site.
  • Communicative and highly flexible person with a lot of practical sense.
  • Good self-organizer, able to organize and prioritize adequately.
  • Hands-on, self-starter personality.
  • Being able to work in a fast changing, demanding environment.
