Who You Are

We are looking to strengthen our team with an ISS and Gateway Operations Engineer. This position is within the Payload and Operations Engineering Services, providing support to the ESA Human Infrastructure Operations Team (HRE-OO); formerly ESA ISS Operations Team. This position is full-time and is based at Columbus Control Center (Col-CC) in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. The expected starting date will be 01 June 2024 but there is some flexibility on this and we will be happy to discuss this with you in person.

What You Will Focus on

  • Coordinate/Monitor activities of the Science Data Center (SDC) service as the HRE and Operations Centers for long term archiving activities. This includes analysis of schedule, monitoring/coordinating data transfer activities between SDC and the USOCs, and support decision making for archiving International Space Station (ISS) data;
  • Review/Evaluate SDC providing archiving process documentation for ISS and other platforms e.g. Gateway;
  • Support operational assessment of the execution of ISS operations activities in support of the Certification of Flight Readiness (CoFR). This includes preparation of verbal CoFR assessment, provision of Minutes of Meetings as well as HRE-OO CoFR statement. Review of CoFR instruction letter. Participation to CoFR Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) and Increment Coordination Meetings (ICMs) as requested;
  • Organise HRE-OO CoFR activities and meetings according to CoFR management plan;
  • Support investigations for Anomaly resolution and operations concept definitions and operational assessments as required;
  • Support ESA ISS Operations Control Board (OCB) by acting as secretary for meeting and agenda management as well as action item tracking & follow up in close coordination with ESA OCB chair. Also, pre-coordination of technical matters for decision making, attendance and notes taking of the discussion and decisions. Also Prepare OCB Minutes of Meetings;
  • Coordinate NASA ISS programme documents Change Request reviews by distributing the related NASA CR documentation to operations experts for review and Gather/Consolidate/Disposition/Provide list of comments to NASA through ESA CN desk;
  • Support Payload assignment process to operations centers by performing a payload data analysis/Compilation for monitoring operational requirements, operations and efficiency. This includes maintain/update/creation of HRE-OO USOC and Operations Center Assignment memo/document;
  • Attend/provide inputs to yearly Performance Review of the Operations Centres. Provision of Minutes of Meetings;
  • Assess/Analyze the USOCs Payloads and Integrated Team systems status as well as follow-up the USOCs’ & Integrated Teams Risk Assessments;
  • Coordinate ISS operational topics with ESA and ISS partner teams for matters related to engineering integration, payload integration and programme support;
  • Represent the ESA operations community advocating operational benefits and recommendation towards other teams and partners;
  • Support review of Gateway programme document Change Request for operations aspects;
  • Support tasks related to monitoring & analysis of relevant Columbus Topology difficulties for operations;
  • Provision of weekly and quarterly basis reports summarizing all activities supported and performed including recommendations on issues and risks observed.

What You Bring

Master’s or Engineering degree in a technical subject (although other fields considered) and/or a minimum 2 years’ experience as Operations Engineer/Flight Controller or in management roles, preferably in ISS Columbus operations.

Essentially

  • Good teamwork, communication and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Native or C1 level English, high standard of oral and written communication skills, including generating reports and clear concise minutes of meeting;
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with international colleagues;
  • Due discretion, and sensitivity in dealing with confidential information;
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent organizational skills, with focus on schedule, meeting deadlines;
  • Analytic skills, integrating several sources of information to provide an assessment and recommendations;
  • Readiness to take on responsibility, work under pressure.

Desirable

  • Experience and/or knowledge of ISS operations;
  • Quick to pick up and understand technical subjects and concepts;
  • German and/or French language skills is an asset.
